I didn't relish the thought of a 35km road
walk to Millstreet today, but it turned out fine. I left the
Inn about 9:20am and dodged peak hour and business traffic for the
first hour as I walked away from the industrial town of Mallow.
Once clear of the town, I had a pleasant day walking the minor
roads using my smartphone for navigation. I chose the most
direct route that didn't use major roads, and frequently checked my
directions, but made no navigational errors. The roads I chose
traversed undulating rural countryside and there was always
something to look at - stately old homes, working farms, windmills,
valley views and the occasional small village. It seems that
any collection of three or more houses warrants a pub, but it's hard
to see how they make money.
As usual, especially walking in
boots on a hard road, my feet were getting tired by the last 10km,
and I'm wondering whether they are ever going to toughen up.
The rest of my body - legs, shoulders, back - are now dealing with
the long days easily.
I reached the long thin town of
Millstreet around 5:30pm and checked into my hotel in the centre of
town. After a shower, I looked for accommodation for the next
night or two, and for a change, had no trouble (though one is a bit
expensive). I usually worry a little about weekend
accommodation, but I've now got this one covered.
After
making the bookings, I crossed the road and ordered a pizza (having
checked the hotel meal prices) and did my usual shopping for drinks
and snacks at a nearby supermarket before picking up the pizza and
retiring to my room for the night. I have now finished the
Blackwater Way and tomorrow start on the Sli Gaeltacht Mhuscrai. |
